Endodontics
Tooth-preserving care for root canal treatment, retreatment, dental trauma and pain or infection related to the dental pulp.
Endodontics focuses on the dental pulp, root canals and tissues around the root tip. The aim is to clean infected or damaged tissue in a controlled way and preserve the natural tooth whenever clinically appropriate. At BY Istanbul, endodontic assessment focuses on understanding the source of pain, managing infection and offering a realistic treatment plan.
Treatment focused on preserving the natural tooth
Root canal treatment is often perceived as difficult or intimidating, but modern endodontics aims to relieve symptoms, control infection and preserve the natural tooth. Deep decay, leakage under old fillings, cracks or trauma can affect the pulp, and medication alone does not address the cause.
When root canal treatment may be needed
Pain that increases with heat, throbbing at night, chewing sensitivity, tooth discoloration or gum swelling may require endodontic evaluation. Some teeth may have root tip infection without obvious pain, so examination and imaging are assessed together.
Retreatment and infection control
A previously treated tooth may still show pain, swelling or radiographic findings due to complex canal anatomy, leakage, fracture, insufficient filling or new decay. In retreatment, old materials are removed, canals are disinfected again and the final restoration is planned carefully.
Timing matters after dental trauma
After dental trauma, teeth may show fracture, mobility, discoloration or sensitivity. Some cases need immediate care, while others require monitoring. Planning may involve pediatric dentistry, restorative care or surgery, with the goal of protecting tooth vitality and root development when possible.
Treatment Areas
Tooth-preserving care for root canal treatment, retreatment, dental trauma and pain or infection related to the dental pulp.
Root Canal Treatment
Affected pulp tissue caused by deep decay, cracks or trauma is cleaned and the root canals are sealed.
Root Canal Retreatment
Previously treated teeth with persistent infection, leakage or filling issues are re-evaluated.
Dental Trauma-related Endodontic Care
Teeth affected by trauma-related discoloration, sensitivity, fracture or pulp involvement are monitored and treated.
Apical Lesion Follow-up
Lesions around the root tip are monitored at appropriate intervals with clinical findings and imaging.
Infected Tooth Treatment
For teeth showing infection, the source of symptoms and restorability of the tooth are assessed together.
Pulp Assessment After Deep Caries
After deep decay, pulp involvement is assessed to determine whether filling, monitoring or root canal treatment is needed.
Root-end Infection Follow-up
Healing of root-end infections is followed with clinical and radiographic checks.
Pain and Sensitivity Assessment
The source is identified in cases of night pain, heat sensitivity, swelling or abscess, then a suitable plan is created.
Pain and history assessment
Pain duration, triggers, trauma history and previous treatments are reviewed in detail.
Clinical examination and imaging
Tooth vitality, chewing sensitivity, restoration status and root tip findings are assessed.
Cleaning the canal system
Affected tissue is removed, canals are shaped and disinfected with appropriate solutions.
Canal filling and temporary protection
The canals are filled, and a temporary or permanent restoration plan is prepared.
Follow-up and final restoration
A filling, inlay/onlay or crown may be considered to protect the tooth long term.
When is root canal treatment needed?
Root canal treatment may be needed when the pulp is irreversibly affected by deep decay, cracks, trauma or infection. The decision is made after examination and imaging.
Can there be discomfort after root canal treatment?
Chewing sensitivity or mild discomfort may occur for a few days. If pain is severe or increasing, you should contact your dentist.
Can every tooth have root canal retreatment?
Not every tooth is suitable for retreatment. Root fracture, severe tooth structure loss or inability to restore the tooth may require other options.
Do I need examination after trauma if there is no pain?
Yes. Pulp changes after trauma can appear later. Discoloration, root development and surrounding tissues should be monitored.
Does a root canal treated tooth need a crown?
It depends on remaining tooth structure and chewing load. Some teeth can be restored with a filling, while others may need a crown or inlay/onlay.
